Systems

Definition

A set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole.

Description

The universe has rules that govern it and its constituent parts, and it is when these parts form a whole that a system is formed. So to understand a system, we must examine the whole as well as its parts.

A system is a group of interacting or interrelated entities that form a unified whole. A system, surrounded and influenced by its environment, is described by its boundaries, structure and purpose and expressed in its functioning. Systems are the subjects of study of systems theory.

Systems theory is the interdisciplinary study of systems, which are cohesive groups of interrelated, interdependent parts that can be natural or human-made. Every system is bounded by space and time, influenced by its environment, defined by its structure and purpose, and expressed through its functioning.
